Science Inquiry: Next Steps

Take a look at this 'Mad Scientist' time lapse movie from lots of NZ schools last year.
Hopefully it can inspire you to think about what you want to investigate next?

Which of our experiments grabbed your attention?

What questions or wonderings do you have?

What more do you want to find out about?

Write your ideas and questions on the Padlet below.

Kidscafe Day

Experimenting with ice on an icy morning.

This morning, I collected some 'puddle ice' from the school car park to repeat our salty ice experiment to test our hypothesis and support our conclusions on the effect of salt on ice. Here is our experiment set up:

The final results were:

The plate with ice and salt took 30 mins 9 seconds to melt completely:

The plate with ice (no salt) took 47 mins 26 seconds to melt completely.

Check out our WOW work page over the next few days to see out explanations...

Home Learning this week: Science Experiments

Room 3 got a whiff of the fantastic experimenting our neighbours in room 4 have been doing so I thought we better have a go ourselves. This week I will be sending home the latest Home Learning Challenge:

The experiments are all 'easy to do at home' with common household ingredients so roll up those sleeves and get experimenting and investigating together!

Experiment instructions and recording sheets will go home on Monday!

Celebrating NZSL week

This week was NZSL week. This is a passion of mine, and I have been learning New Zealand Sign Language for the past few years. This week we logged onto the NZSL website to learn 7 signs in 7 days! On friday, we had a go at recording our favourite sign that we had learnt. Some of us have started experimenting with finger spelling our names and making sentences too.

What different types of science are there?

Today we are investigating the different types of science (and science jobs) out there.

We are using this NZ website for our research: Science Kids

We will share back what we find, so watch this space.

Mad Science Day

Here is the experiment we investigated today in room 3:

What a fantastic day, full of hands-on experimenting, thinking, hypothesising and proving! What was your favourite experiment? Leave a comment below.

A real life Scientist!

Today we had a visit from a scientist from our community, Nigel Johnston (Amy's Dad). He is a plant scientist and told us all about how he became a scientist and why he loves his job!

This got us all really excited for our Science Ignition Day tomorrow!
Watch out for the mad scientists!!

How to tie a Sari?

Yesterday Whaea Alice showed us something she learnt on her holiday in India. She shared the instructions with us and we all had a go. It was fun to try and it felt different to wear a different style of clothes!
